Adrian College Bridal Expo - 2012

We are excited to be ringing in the New Year on the runway at the Adrian College Bridal Expo. Janet Kappa of Brooklyn Bridal & Prom is participating in the fashion show at this event, and we are pleased to be able to accessorize her models with our headpiece, veiling, bridal hat and jewelry options. Our friends at Flowers & Such will be on hand to show us their bridal bouquet magic as well!

Adrian College and Sodexo Catering will be hosting their 4th Annual Bridal Expo this winter on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012. The College is seeking vendors to participate in this unique opportunity schedule to take place in the Adrian Tobias Center on the Adrian College campus from noon until 4 P.M.

If you are planning a wedding in the upcoming year and located in the lower Michigan area, please, plan on joining us to enjoy some of the gorgeous gowns Brooklyn has in stock, as well as some fantastic accessory options. A Touch of 40's Glamour & Class: Abbe Buck - Jazz/Swing Vocalist

I love so many aspects of 1940's culture; particularly its glamorous and romantic qualities. Many wedding formats include a transitional cocktail hour between the ceremony and reception dinner. I think it is a grand idea to include musical entertainment during this transition, and imagine how fun it would be to have a small jazz quartet and swing vocalist to warm up my guests for the evening fun ahead. Rita Hayworth is a splendid example of this genre and time in our history. . .

But how fortunate we are to have contemporary talent to continue this tradition. I met one, Abbe Buck of Fredericksburg, Virginia, via Facebook. It was a thrill to receive a collection CD of some of her arrangements recently, and I encourage those on the East coast of the US to consider her as a option for your special events.

Abbe Buck, a professional vocalist and entertainer specializing in vintage jazz standards and the big band sound, is joined by Edmond Charles, accompanist and head of the Edmond Charles Trio, a well-known group in the Washington, DC - Baltimore area, is currently booking engagements. Miss Buck tells us that she is "absolutely thrilled to be able to share (my) love of telling a story through words and music" and to perform on the east coast. She is currently in negotiation to start to perform globally, in Hawaii and the Far East.
Miss Buck began is no stranger to singing; she started voice training at 13 while growing up in Chicago. Yet she claims to be a late-bloomer, resuming a serious singing career in her mid-30's with Al Raymond's and Vincent Lopez Jr's big band in New York City, and Philadelphia. While performing in New York, Abbe made contact with the great vocalist Rosemary Clooney, who urged the completion of Buck's CD "Big Band Swing and Saloon Style - Songs from a Bygone Era."
Miss Buck has been active on the board of The Society of Singers, an organization that supports many older or infirm singers who did not receive royalties from their earlier works (http://www.singers.org/) . Abbe performs in many venues other than the ‘cabaret/jazz’ circuit, which includes major benefits and even singing at Barnes & Noble Bookstores in the greater DC area as of late, to spread the Society’s message. Buck donates proceeds of her CD to the Society, with the full intention of preserving "timeless pop" and the memory of the great pop swing vocalists who came before her, such as Clooney, Tony Bennett and Fran Warren.

DSP Fotographie Client Appreciation Party - Follow-up

I just realized my neglect to share some of the fun experienced by those able to attend the DSP Fotographie Appreciation Party hosted by Meghan and Dmitriy Shkolnik at the up-scale Tre Monti Restaurant in Troy. We were asked to accessorize the runway show and used the opportunity to introduce some of our new street-wear designs and crystal/pearl brooch bridal bouquets.

The models wore the ever-stunning couture bridal gowns of Katerina Bocci and high-fashion street wear provided by Eden Revolution of West Bloomfield. . . styled by the talented Runway Salon and Spa team of Shelby Township. Local brides will find themselves in expert care with this team.

The food prepared and wine served by Tre Monti was gourmet quality with elegant presentation. . . service was exceptional; professional, attentive, yet warm and personable. If you are in the area, you really need to work in a special evening at Tre Monti.

More collaborative ventures with DSP and Runway are in the works, and I am so excited to be able to work with them! Meghan and Dmitriy are a dynamic duo with a brilliant future in the world of photography (and beyond, I imagine). . . from fashion to wedding to corporate (official photographers of Ford Motor Company), they capture the moments with technical and creative expertise.

Thank you again, Meghan and Dmitriy, it was a fabulous evening of surprises (including a performance by Melissa Molinaro).

Katerina Bocci's 2012 Collection

New York International Bridal Week is wrapping-up and now those of us who were unable to be there can anticipate the photos and videos that commemorate the unveiling of this year's new collections.

This is the first I have seen Katerina Bocci's collection in its finished form. As usual, she awes me with her talent. This collection is superb; attention to detail, elegance of form and material are unsurpassed. Really, brides you must watch for her trunk show schedule in the upcoming season. These beautiful creations must be seen face-to-face for full impact!

This collaborative effort included the talents of Elizabeth Ivezaj (model), Irene Mahmud (photographer), Tanja Dedivanaj (hair stylist), and Renata Stojcevski (make up artist).

I am honored that Katerina chose one of my new hat designs for this ad photo shoot. I couldn't be in better company. . .

Kalamazoo West Coast Swing Dancing. . .

West Coast Swing is an energetic, upbeat form of regional jitterbug originating in the 1940's that allows for creative improvisation. This style of dance uses movements of extension and compression between partners, creating an elastic-like flow. I love it and have to share two performances below for you to enjoy!

I am getting warmed up for an event next Saturday evening. The Kalamazoo, MI chapter of USA Dance has invited us to share our designs with the dancers at their next event on September 17th. The costumes worn for West Coast Swing vary from sassy informal street wear to more glitzy, bling designs worn for major competitions. It will be fun to work with dancers to design accessory complements to finish their ensembles. I am eager to share with them (and you) some of the new head wraps and headdresses that were created in our studio late this summer. . . Look for their introduction soon after the debuting events of this week.

Alasyn - Beauty Pageants are NOT about Building Superficial Values. . .

Time to introduce another kind, talented, and intelligent young woman, who I proudly count among my Kansas friends! In addition to excelling in her studies, Alasyn Zimmerman has pursued the learning experiences associated with pageant pursuits. She was the title holder for the Miss Kansas Outstanding Teen in 2008 and currently holds the title for Miss Southern Kansas - America (with her brother below):

Alasyn competed for the Miss Kansas America crown recently with a platform in support of students' academic success that encourages extracurricular activities. As an academic, I am aware of the merits of such support, and I applaud her efforts in this direction. Indeed, Alasyn is a perfect example of this success!

Two of the ensembles that Alasyn wore during the Miss Kansas competition are below. The gorgeous satin and lace gown was sponsored by my friend, Beth George, of Foggy Bottom Boutique in Wichita. I love them both. . .

One of Alasyn's longstanding extracurricular activities is dance. She danced competitively during early childhood; a pursuit that brought her numerous rewards. At the age of 10 she decided to focus on her ballet training. Alasyn has been a part of Kansas' only touring ballet company 'Ballet Wichita' for 10 years, and she became a soloist in the company in 2008. Some of her favorite roles have included: Clara, Chinese Lady, Icicle, and Orchid in "The Nutcracker", Glenda in "The Wizard of Oz" , and a bat in "Merlin's Song". She has studied under the direction of Jill Landrith for the past 8 years, and had the opportunity to study dance with The Washington Ballet during the summers of 2006 and 2007. Additionally, she has worked with various musical theater companies in Wichita. (e.g., dance captain for "Festival of Broadway" with Music Theater of Wichita at the age of fourteen and choreographer for her school theater and area productions.)

It is NO surprise that ballet is the talent she currently features in her pageant competitions. Alasyn choreographed her ballet performance for this year's Miss Kansas competition to the music of "Electricity" from the Broadway Musical "Billy Elliot" by Elton John. The mid-leap shot below was taken from that performance. Pretty amazing!

When Alasyn asked me to create a headpiece for her to wear for this performance (inspired by "Black Swan"), I was thrilled to do so. . .

As always, we were sure to offer plenty of opportunity for securing her headpiece in place. . . .absolutely necessary!

A recent high school graduate (International Baccalaureate diploma), Alasyn is beginning her studies in broadcast journalism and dance at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She hopes to become a national news network correspondent (a previously-revealed secret dream is to become a well known trilingual news broadcaster and travel the world covering the news).

I have no doubt that Alasyn will continue to achieve success in life, no matter what life brings. She is poised with the goodness to bring the best she can to whatever she does, on behalf of others and herself. It is a pleasure to watch. . .

Meaghan and Eric's North Branch Wedding!!

As shared numerous times before, it is a genuine thrill for me to play a role in the special occasions of others. This rush is particularly relevant when the bride I am working with holds a special place in my heart outside of Breeziway. This was certainly true for the recent wedding of Meaghan and Eric, and it was a joy to be able to work with Meaghan to create her bridal headpiece and hair accents for her attendants.

Meaghan was a student who worked in my lab for her undergraduate honors thesis. She is among the top percentage of students who over the decades have impressed me with their character, determination, competence and promise. Meaghan was recognized by the faculty with a rare honor for her thesis work and is now beginning her third year of medical training. Her new hubby, Eric, is an ideal partner; their intellect and edgy humor well-matched! Eric will be completing requirements for a Ph.D. in Sociology in the foreseeable future, and it has been a pleasure to get to know him better in recent years.

Meaghan and Eric were married in the gorgeous backyard of Eric's family home in North Branch, MI. Their private ceremony was performed by one of Eric's brothers on a patio built for the occasion along a stream that meanders through their property. Enjoy the photos shared below. . . It was such a lovely event, I am happy to be able to share these with you.

A delicious buffet dinner was enjoyed by all, followed with champagne-fueled dancing and strolls around the moon-light reflecting pond. . .

It was a marvelous, romantic evening!

Styleline Magazine - July, 2011

Grades were submitted yesterday, so Paul and I are headed to Las Vegas tomorrow for a week of work and fun. I have a conference to attend, and we plan to explore some of the area's awesome sights such as Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon. Anyway, I picked up this month's issue of Styleline Magazine - Detroit while treating myself to a pre-holiday pedicure. It is a fantastic read with a balance of pleasing visuals and text. If you are in southeast Michigan, be sure to pick up a copy. You will find the exploring well worth the time!

I was also pleased to see our Tika headpiece featured in this month's issue with the gorgeous Katerina Bocci gown that inspired this design. The original design as pictured was made of nagorie feathers dyed a blush to match the Tika gown. It has since been customized for brides in other colors, with varied crystal accents and adjusted swallow feather lengths. We had no idea this would become such a popular design off the runway, but are certainly pleased.

Now off to finish packing. . .

Breeziway Design Wins Kentucky Derby Judge's Choice Award

I have just received the following press release from the Kentucky Derby Museum regarding our award (Judge's Choice) for the 2011 annual hat contest. The museum has created a slide presentation of the 20 hats chosen for display at the museum this year. I am awed by the talent represented and thrilled to be a part of this group and display.

2011 Kentucky Derby Museum Hat Contest Winners Announcement

For Immediate Release (Louisville, KY: June 22, 2011) Congratulations to one of this year’s Kentucky Derby Museum Hat Contest winners, Sandra Nagel Whitworth of West Bloomfield, MI. The museum received over 50 hat entries and of those entries only 20 hats were selected for display.

Whitworth’s hat was designed by her and is a blue headband/hat with feathers and yellow accents.

Hats are essential to the Kentucky Derby experience. Choosing the right hat for the occasion is as important as betting on the right horse. On Derby day fancy hats, themed hats and goofy hats unite to uphold the long standing tradition. The Derby Museum glorifies this tradition by bringing the hat experience right to our visitors. Our Derby Hat Contest winners display a broad range of designer and novelty men and women’s hats showcasing trending styles.

A photo of Whitworth’s hat is attached to this release. Whitworth’s hat is one of 20 currently on display in the It’s My Derby exhibit and will stay there until June, 2012.

Kentucky Derby Millinery Contest - "Polly's Pacesetter"

I have thought of entering the Kentucky Derby Museum millinery contest since the inception of Breeziway, but did not feel sufficiently mature in my new venture until this year. I had mulled over some basic design ideas earlier in the year, but nothing began to mesh until late winter when one of my students entered the scene. Stephanie (pictured below) had heard about Breeziway and my love for feathers and dropped by my office one afternoon with a bag of gorgeous macaw feathers. They were recent molts of one of her parrots, Reagan, and she thought I might have a use for them.

Reagan is on the left below, next to his equally-magnificent sibling! Gorgeous, aren't they? I knew instantly that Reagan's fine feathers would form the core and theme of my Derby contest design.

I had the pleasure of traveling to Foggy Bottom Boutique in Wichita, Kansas twice during the winter of 2010 for trunk shows and made some dear friendships that mean a great deal to me. The owner of FBB, Beth George, has been so supportive during Breeziway's growth, and I am proud to be of some support to the lovely and talented young women who staff her boutique during their pageant endeavors. One of them, Cat Taylor, has just won the title of first runner-up in the Miss Kansas (Miss America) pageant. I am so excited about her accomplishment. . . Next year will be the year for nationals, Cat! I feel it!

Caitlin earned the title of Miss Rosehill 2011 to enter the Miss Kansas pageant. She lives her platform of Severe Weather Awareness, as a tornado chaser and advanced meteorology student at the University of Oklahoma. She won both the swimsuit and talent prelim competitions in this current pageant. Way to go, Cat!

Miss Wooded Hills 2011, Carissa Kelley, won the title of Miss Kansas 2011 and will represent the state in the upcoming Miss America pageant. Congratulations & best wishes, Carissa!

Danica's Custom Carolina - Passionate Red & Burgundy

Life has been busy, busy, busy. . . I am sorry to have neglected my sharing and figured it was time to get an entry ready.

It has been a pleasure to work with Danica as she prepares for her mid-June wedding in Connecticut. This has been no easy feat for her as she and her honey have been in Saudia Arabia - where they met in 2008. Their engagement began in 2010 on a beach in Sri Lanka. No moss grows on this pair, so it is no surprise that their wedding will be a zesty expression of their love of life and adventure.

Danica and Matt will hold a garden wedding at his family's summer cottage on the Atlantic in Niantic, Connecticut. Danica will wear the sassy tea-length gown below to be accented with red and burgundy. Her shoes and jewelry will be topped-off with a custom design in red and burgundy, inspired by the Carolina, paired with a crystal accented birdcage veil. The happy couple have asked their guests to wear a dash of red (or more) to keep the passionate theme in full- force.

The following photos of Danica's headpiece were sent to her today for feedback. We will then make any adjustments and finish the design to have it shipped to her in time for her stylist appointment.

It will be a day of love and fun for this happy couple, their family & friends! We wish them the very best on their wedding day & a lifetime of adventure.

The Philip Treacy hat worn by Prince Beatrice to the recent Royal Wedding has caused quite a stir around the world and social media (Facebook), as people have weighed in on the design and her choice to wear. Personally? Via individual expression, I say!

OK, so the criticism and humor run rampant. . . . I much prefer the humor and have to wonder whether the Princess' style choices were designed to play a joke of sorts on the public. . .

Regardless, I have respect for Prince Beatrice's recent decision to form "The Little Bee Initiative" to sell the hat on eBay in benefit of two children's charities, Children in Crisis & UNICEF.

Today involves the final day of prep for the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club Katerina Bocci fashion show. . . We are not noted on the handbill, but Breeziway will nonetheless be present in an array of special occasion accessories to be worn by the models (styled by Runway Salon & Spa).

The show will feature some of the headpiece designs made exclusively for the Fall 2011 Katerina Bocci Bridal Collection as debuted at New York International Bridal Week last October, as well as several new designs for brides and others inspired by gorgeous Bocci silk suits and evening gowns. Some of the items in our new crystal-encrusted jewelry collection will be introduced at this show, and we are very excited to be able to participate. Photos and availability of this new collection will follow the show!

Life has been quite gloomy in Michigan lately. We sure could use some sunshine to help make the studio *pop* with the glimmer and shimmer of these designs.

Victoria's Custom Bridal Hat Ready for Kleinfeld's Fitting . . . .

A Breeziway bride, Victoria, had her gown fitting at Kleinfeld's in New York yesterday, and we were happy to be able to have her bridal hat to her in time for this event! Victoria will be wearing a gown by Michelle Roth, which is sold exclusively at Kleinfeld's. It is a mermaid style with layers of chantilly lace, ruching and crystal accents.

The hat we designed to complement, Victoria's gown is made of 4 different types of laces imported from Lativa and France and Duchess silk Satin. Shades of ivory and silk white in the laces were carried over to the feathers used to mimic the lovely texture of the gown.

We were so pleased to receive the following feedback from the bride's mother:

I had to tell you how beautiful the headpiece was that you made for Victoria. Its better than I ever could have imagined. Stunning, really. Thanks so much for getting it to us in time for her fitting. I will definitely recommend you and give your card to anyone looking for any of your products.

The crimping of pheasant tail feathers into hair is spreading across the country as the latest trend for summer fashion fun. The Get Married blog has suggested that brides consider this hair embellishment for themselves and bridesmaids for their weddings. . . a fun idea for a Bohemian, earthy event for sure. I am thinking, however, that this sassy statement is a great idea for other pursuits involving fun and the sun, leaving something more spectacular for one of the most important moments in our lives.

Although I am over-the-top excited about Prince William & Kate's wedding events tomorrow, I needed a break from the royal perspective. It seemed a belated remembrance of the wedding anniversary of British royalty of another 'sort' would be a nice contrast to the current craziness!

John Lennon and Yoko One were married on March 20, 1969 in Gibraltar after a series of travel/passport woes. They spent their honeymoon in bed at the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam; sharing their messages of peace and love to the world via the media in attendance. This message seemed to permeate John and Yoko's social and political activities to follow until John's tragic murder in December, 1980. Together they created quite a legacy.

Their British marriage-registry certificate with the "Rock of Gibraltor" in the background. (Paul & I have one of those certificates too!) Yoko wore spanking white sneakers, knees socks, layered skirt, long-sleeve white shirt, and a wide brim capeline hat made of felt; simple and sweet!

The Beatles released the Ballad of John and Yoko in May of 1969, which chronicles the events surrounding their wedding. . .

Why, oh why, is it so difficult for some to draw attention to their heads/faces by framing it in a gorgeous hat or fascinator? Why are some reduced to adolescent sarcasm when faced with the 'chapeau challenge'?!

"I'm stuttering because it is very boring trying on hats." (The psychologist in me doubts this explanation.) "We don't wear hats in this country." (Speak for yourself dear. You aren't important enough to speak for all of us.) Please, Barbara, get over yourself. Its just a hat. You should be able to control it (think sophistication), not let it control you.

Dr. Rosalyn's Custom Gardenia . . . .

Florists often discourage brides from using gardenias in their bouquet palette. They do require extra attention when creating a collection of flowers; their short stems are typically mounted to an extension. Also, they may brown when handled excessively. With reasonably gentle handling, however, they contribute hours of velvety elegance and unsurpassed fragrance to a bride's immediate wedding experience. I have used gardenias successfully in my own arrangements. They are among my favorite flowers, and I feel badly when brides who love them too are discouraged from having what they want. This was my motivation for creating the design for our gardenias, handmade of Duchess silk satin.

We had a rushed order last month for an April 1st wedding. Dr. Rosalyn, a lover of this classic blossom and denied of her wish for a gardenia bouquet, asked us to make a Gardenia headpiece for her. We were thrilled to hear from her upon the happy couple's return from their honeymoon this past, and I want to share the photos she sent.

Our basic Gardenia headpiece sports a small tulle ruffle that softens one side. Rosalyn's single shoulder gown was accented with a gorgeous satin flower, so we decided to encircle the gardenia of her headpiece in tulle to create a more symmetrical accent to her gown.

What a radiantly, gorgeous bride!

Michigan Dance Challenge - Hyatt Regency Dearborn

It has been touch-and-go for the past few days with a health condition making life difficult, but we made it. Breeziway has just set-up at the Michigan Dance Challenge Ballroom dancing competition at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn. The people are warm and the flow of ladies so far suggests that feathers and crystals are a favorite with this crowd. Oh surprise!

We are in a great location, just outside the ballroom. The music is varied and lovely, and we are just steps away from the dancer warm-up pad. It is so much fun to watch the couples practice.

The gowns are a gorgeous swirl of color and sparkle. BUT there is one very important body part that seems to be generally neglected. Can you guess which part I mean?

Where are their fascinators??!! Breeziway is on hand to help with this shameful situation. It is our goal to add some sparkle, fluff, and glitz to the ballroom dance floor. =) Over a thousand are expected to be in attendance this evening. Much to do yet.

Sweden Crown Princess Victoria and Mr. Daniel Westling

Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, Duchess of Västergötland (1977) is her country's heir apparent and the only female in this role worldwide. If she ascends to the throne as anticipated, Victoria will be Sweden's fourth queen regnant. Her first place in succession formally went into effect on 1 January 1980 with the parliamentary change to the Act of Succession that introduced equal primogeniture. Her father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, is a third cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, making Victoria 205th in the line of succession to the British & other Commonwealth thrones. Her younger brother comes ahead of her in the British succession, though, because it is governed by male preference primogeniture, unlike Sweden's more progressive policy.

Crown Princess Victoria married her personal trainer, Daniel Westling, during a lavish royal wedding on June 19th, 2010 attended by 1,200 royal guests and dignitaries; witnessed more peripherally by over a half million people who lined the streets of Stockholm. By all indications, the couple are deeply in love. . . The arranged royal marriages of the past are clearly giving way to a new breed of unions.

The beautiful and beaming bride wore an off-white gown of Duchess satin with short sleeves and rounded, off-the-shoulder neckline designed by Swedish designer, Pär Engsheden. A 16.5 foot train from the waistline of her gown formed the base of the V-shaped back. Victoria wore the Cameo tiara, worn by her mother, Queen Silvia, on her own wedding day years 34 past to the day. The crown is made of gold, pearls and cameos; one that depicts the the Greek myth of cupid and Psyche. Victoria accented the crown with a pearl bracelet and cameo drop earrings.

Stricken by an eating disorder in 1997, Princess Victoria headed to the United States in 1998 for treatment and the anonymity needed to help her heal. She studied at Yale during this phase of her life.

The book, "Victoria, Victoria" about her eating disorder was published in 2002. Speaking about her condition, Victoria said, “I felt like an accelerating train, going right down... during the whole period. I had eating disorders and was aware of it, my anguish was enormous. I really hated how I looked like, how I was... I, Victoria, didn’t exist. It felt like everything in my life and around me was controlled by others. The one thing I could control was the food I put in me”. . . . “What happened cost, and I was the one who stood for the payments. Now I’m feeling well and with the insights I’ve acquired through this I can hopefully help someone else”.

Royal status does not protect one from human vulnerabilities. Victoria's serious challenges in life, may very well explain the expressions of joy of love we see in her wedding photos. . . . such a sweet and deserving outcome for this lovely, young woman.

Parents of the bride and groom. . . .

The bride's younger sister, Princess Madeleine, wore a blue chiffon dress with a crystal-embroidered bodice, and a skirt with a cascade of ruffles. She also wore for the first time the diamond Connaught tiara which features five loops of forget-me-not flowers and leaves - each with a diamond hanging pendent. Princess Madeleine was engaged to be married late last year, but broke off the engagement after her fiance' was found to be unfaithful. As already noted, royal status does not exempt one from life's painful moments.

And we can't neglect Princess Victoria's younger brother, Prince Carl Philip. . . the handsome and available, Carl Philip. . . Some photos are provided for your viewing pleasure! . . . .

The Detroit campus of the International Academy of Design & Technology has announced the timing of its annual fashion show. This is a special evening of fun and plenty of style. I hope local fashion fans are able to attend and support this fine institute and its students! There is much talent in the Detroit area to be appreciated.

Imagine Fashion Show

The International Academy of Design & Technology (IADT) will be hosting its student fashion show, Imagine, on March 16, 2011 at the Royal Oak Music Theatre. Imagine is an annual fashion show, now in its seventh year, featuring original designs by students in the Fashion Design and Fashion Design and Merchandising programs at IADT’s Detroit (Troy) campus.

“We’re thrilled to showcase Metro Detroit’s talented student fashion designers,” said Julie Patterson, fashion design program chair at IADT-Detroit. “Our students work extremely hard to prepare for this special event.”

The 24 year old Zulu Princess Bukhosibemvelo married her love, Sipho Nyawo, during the summer of 2009. The princess is director of the Amathonga Institute, which supports the efforts of entrepreneurs in South Africa. Her new husband is a business executive. The photos of their lovely wedding day at the Botanical Gardens in Durban reflect the bright smiles of the happy couple and their guests. The bride wore a gown that was designed by Johannesburg designer Julian and carried a bouquet of pastel pink spring roses. The groom sported a gray suit from the Giorgio Armani collection.

The pleated neckline of her gown features an element found in the collections of numerous bridal designers. I love the textured styling of this contemporary look.

The bride’s father King Zwelithini has 37 children – 22 sons and 15 daughters while her mother Queen Mantfombi is Swazi King Mswati III’s sister. This couple and their guests are perfect examples of Soaring Hearts!

Traditional African wedding attire consists of the multiple-piece Buba (blouse), Iro (wrapper), Gele (head wear) and Ipele (shawl) The gele and ipele are often made of hand-loomed Yoruba Aso oke fabric. I know where to look for inspiration when I get around to creating those turban designs still swirling in my head.

Queen Victoria's Wedding & Victorian Vintage Influences on Contemporary Bridal Fashion

Queen Victoria (1819-1901) is often credited for initiating the use of white for bridal gowns. Although history indicates that Anne of Brittany (1477-1514) wore a white bridal gown when she married King Louis XII of France 3 centuries earlier (1499) among others (Marie Louise of Austria when she married Napoleon in 1810 and Princess Charlotte of Wales when she married Prince Leopold of Cobourg in 1816), Victoria's choice of white (1840) occurred in the spotlight of photography and in the midst of a long-standing tradition of wearing color. . . a trend that is returning to the bridal fashion scene. It seems that changes are called for periodically.

Ever inspired by Victoria and Albert's love story, I want to share some detail about her bridal attire. Much of Victoria's gown was made of fine white Honiton lace made exclusively for her, costing approximately 1,000 pounds and the efforts of more than 200 people over an eight month period. It is said that the designs for this lace were destroyed to keep others from duplicating them. The gown itself was made of white satin accented with clusters of orange flower blossoms and crafted by artisans in Spitelfields Market of London.

Orange blossoms were very popular accessories during the Victorian era, often worn as a wreath or circlet, which is exactly what Queen Victoria wore on her wedding day. Her orange blossom crown was accented with two large ostrich feather plumes that helped fill out the space over her lace veiling. The plumes appear in the royal photographs, but were omitted in her bridal portrait.

Orange blossoms are very fragrant and during the Victorian era, symbolized fertility, purity, and chasity, making their addition to the bridal ensemble quite appropriate for the times. When the blossoms were in season, brides would often use wax facsimiles or crowns made of other blossoms such as roses, lavender or wild flowers for their headpiece coronets.

Royal brides often wore a crown of jewels, rather than the floral crown. Victoria, however, wore jewels that represented her social status. She wore an armlet with the Order of the Garter (which reads, “Honi soit qui mal y pense”, or translated in English “Shame be to him who thinks evil of it”) and the Star of the Order. Both are pictured below. Does the tradition of wearing a bridal brooch date back to this choice?

We still see strong influences from the Victorian era in our bridal designs. Some contemporary designs below with their accentuated butt bustles and trains are classic Victorian. Lace, embroidery, and other intricate, delicate and feminine details are all aspects of Victorian design that still reign in many contemporary designs such as those below.

One has to admire Victoria, the woman who ascended to her throne at the age of 18, and held that position for the longest reign in British history; a life of intensity in love, public service and influence - an influence that has lasted many lifetimes. Victoria and Albert parented 9 off-spring; each leaving their own marks on society.

An event at the Royal Albert Hall is a must for any London honeymooners! Several years ago my husband took me there to see Puccini's Madame Butterfly. It is an evening I will never forget.

The Royal Albert Hall was built to fulfil the vision of Prince Albert (Queen Victoria's consort) of a 'Central Hall' that would be used to promote understanding and appreciation of the Arts and Sciences and would stand at the heart of the South Kensington estate, surrounded by museums and places of learning.

Zara Phillips (1981) is the 29 year old second child and daughter of Princess Anne and her first husband Mark Phillips. Zara is Prince Williams' cousin and the oldest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II. Zara and her fiance, Gloucester Rugby player - Mike Tindall, announced their engagement last December. Tindall proposed to Zara at their home in Cheltenham.

I absolutely adore this town and the Cotswolds area at its perimeter. The Montpellier area of Cheltenham is quite Parisian, and the Cotswolds absolutely breathtaking and magical. I am compelled to digress a bit to share some visuals of this gorgeous area of England. I am so missing England right now. . .

As best as I can tell, there has not yet been a formal announcement of Zara and Mike's wedding date. Speculations in the media cite May, others July. I will be looking for more developments on this front, and we will eavesdrop when the time arrives! In the meantime, I thought it would be fun to sample some of Zara's millinery style. Lovely looks ahead. . .

Cloches of earlier decades evolved into the popular head hugging, brimless hats of the 1950's. This first style is representative of the turban sported by many women as more casual head apparel.

Feathers in their natural state or dyed in earth colors were also often used to trim hats during the 1950's. The natural iridescent cock feathers used in the design below may have foreshadowed the bouffant hairstyles that contributed to the reduction of millinery arts in fashion during the 1960's.

In anticipation of the upcoming British Royal wedding, I am enjoying photos of royal weddings past and plan to share some of them with you during the upcoming months. This entry is for 'vintage' lovers and those who appreciate timeless beauty and grace.

For the too young to know among us, Grace Kelly (November 12, 1929 – September 14, 1982) was a talented American actress of considerable influence who ended her prolific Oscar-winning, acting career in 1956 at the age of 26 when she married her Prince - Rainier III of Monaco.

Princess Grace's gown was made of 25 yards of silk taffeta, 98 yards of silk tulle, and 300 yards of Valenciennes lace.

A Custom Shaina Fascinator for a Pretty Little Performer. . .

Time for a little break in the studio to share a custom design that is headed out today. A sweet 7 year old will be wearing a customized Shaina for a performance this upcoming week. We don't have a photo of the exact dress she will be wearing, but the photo below provides us with a general idea of the color and design of what she will be wearing, a brown satin background embellished with flowers in shades of purple.

The photos of her fascinator below were taken quickly but, nonetheless, show the customizations to include a shading of feathers and Swarovski crystal accent using a more youthful, flower.

JFK's Inauguration, Jackie's Style & their Wedding . .

Today is the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's inauguration as the 35th President of the United States. Many aspects of American culture have changed since that era, both politically and socially. It seemed a good moment to reflect on the principles of JFK's administration, and to highlight the iconic style of his first lady, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy . . . a woman of style, grace, and beauty on many levels.

Kennedy's inaugural speech is heralded 50 years later as the first call of Americans to a life of civic responsibility. There is an excellent analysis of the speech and administration released today by CBS News at this link (embedding prohibited). There is some excellent footage, well worth the time to watch.

JFK's Inauguration Address is provided below without commentary. Our young followers might enjoy listening to this speech for the first time. The message was important and inspired many of your parents to choose life courses that have influenced the world you grow in today. "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

The Kennedys were married in Newport, Rhode Island on September 12, 1953; an event that included approximately 1,000 guests as orchestrated by Jackie's Mother and her politically-motivated Father-in-Law. . . . I will never forget my day of exploring this beautiful shoreline community with my oldest daughter several years ago. I still have images of the elegant mansions and rolling seaside hills. I can imagine what a gorgeous day this was for them.

Jackie's gown was created by a popular couture designer at the time, Ann Lowe of New York. It was made of 50 yards of ivory silk taffeta, with rows of tucking, ruffles and wax flowers. History tells us that Jackie did not like the gown, finding it much too fussy for her more sleek, contemporary style. Such a shame that she was not allowed to express herself as she wanted on this special day.

Jackie accessorized her gown with a pearl necklace, pearl and diamond bracelet (a gift from Jack), and a diamond leaf pin (gift from her in-laws). She wore wrist length gloves and carried a pink and white bouquet of orchids and gardenias (my favorite bridal flower and the inspiration for our hand pressed silk gardenia headpieces),

The gorgeous veiling worn by Jackie was borrowed from her Grandmother; made of rosepoint lace held in place by a small lace cap decorated with orange blossoms. I absolutely love this veil and was inspired by designs like this while creating a few of our newer vintage-veiling options. We would love to make you a one-of-a-kind veil like this for any of you moved by this artistic detailing.

Some of you may already know that Breeziway is the couture headpiece designer that the Raffles Resort Chain chose to feature in the wedding guide book, Raffles Romance, made available in the chains' resort rooms worldwide. Well, we have just received word that the famed Raffles chain will soon be opening a new resort on Praslin Island, Seychelles. Praslin Island is the second largest in the Seychelles archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the East coast of Africa; a bit of luxurious paradise on this marvelous planet we inhabit!

Raffles Praslin, will feature 86 villas. Located on the northeast tip of Praslin Island, the second largest island in the Seychelles and close to the city´s airport, the site measures 300,000 square meters, with 500 meters of direct beachfront land. The development is also close to one of the Seychelles natural treasures and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Vallée de Mai.

It is such a pleasure to be touched by the talents of local artists. Our friend & amazing designer, Katerina Bocci, recently contracted a local photographer for a photo shoot of some of the gowns in her 2011 Bridal Collection. Selections from this shoot are featured in the current issues of Grace Ormonde's Wedding Style and Inside Wedding magazines. We were honored to be able to contribute several headpieces that were designed specifically for Katerina's gowns, so the photos also feature our Tika headpiece.

The prodigious photos below were created by Gabe and Jennifer Hillebrand of Hillebrand Photography. Their techniques captured the lovely, levitated model in mid-movement, so we experience the lightness of being that characterizes even the grandest of Katerina's ball gown designs, the Tika. I love the fluid expression of her designs. Can you imagine how you would look on your wedding day in this marvelous creation?

It is inspiring to see what this guild of 14 millinery designers has been inspired to organize. This was the guild's 2nd runway show, and I hope to see more such events in Southern Cal, as well as other US locations. It is time for the fashion world to recognize the importance of millinery contributions, as well as time for us to again recognize the importance of and fun in framing our most important assets, the true seat of our unique selves. Why would we pay more attention to the style at our feet than the style about our faces and heads? The mind boggles.

Jezebel.com shares photos of British royal women (sans Kate Middleton) in their holiday attire. Love the fascinator hats! Other sources say that Prince William was at work with his search and rescue crew in North Wales, as Kate enjoyed the Christmas holiday with her parents in Berkshire, England.

For a few minutes there, Sophie, Countess of Wessex got the Middleton treatment and her every thread was scrutinized. And I gotta say, the woman can wear a hat like no one else in the current extended family. A little 30s, a touch Tyrol, a lot of weird: royal perfection.

It makes my heart soar to see a growing interest in millinery arts (i.e. hats!) in the states. We are allowing ourselves a limitless avenue of personal expression with this renewed fashion statement! Sara's Customized Tress Bridal Feather, Swarovski Crystal & Silk Headpiece & Birdcage Veil

We have been working on a customized Tress bridal headpiece for Sara. It is time to share feedback photos with her before finalizing her design. I thought some of you might enjoy seeing the results of our work with Sara!

Sara has chosen the lovely strapless, silk chiffon Grecian-style gown in light ivory/silk white with princess neckline and champagne satin sash shown below.

Sara wanted several changes to the Tress design, which included customized dying of the silk organza & velvet pressed flower, the design of a pearl & Swarovski crystal accent, and the addition of taller stripped coque feathers. She has chosen the 12" French veiling birdcage in ivory, mounted on a separate comb. This will allow her to remove the veiling during the reception.

We have used a few shades of feathers to add interest to her design and created a dramatic accent of antique silver filigree elements, large pointed-back Swarovski crystals, and cultured pearls. The crystal accent is pinned in place in a few of the photos below, as we want to make sure that Sara is happy with the outcome before permanently mounting it in place. I was just thinking how lovely a matching accent (with or without feathers) would look on the left side of the empire, satin sash of her gown and will share that idea with her.

We will eagerly await her feedback!

Full Frontal Fashion's "Girl on the Run" - Chapter 1

The sensational new style site, Full Frontal Fashion, has released a series of fascinating videos focused on the Winter, 2011 season. This first chapter shares the frenetic & depressing underbelly of the major shows in Paris. The question is raised, "Is fashion falling apart?". It seems the once-upon-a-time apex of the Fashion world, Paris, is falling indeed. I don't understand the sagging crotch trousers worn by their hostess, Mademoiselle Agnes. They are so unattractive to my eye. . . and the comment, "I kiss your mouth, your neck, and your ass." What?! This is an interesting video; bad, bed hair & crassness taken to a classless extreme. . .

Oh my, let's get a grip!

This is an interesting number by Jean-Paul Gaultier, inspired by 1930's lingerie. LOVE the velvet turban.

Beverley Mitchell's Bridal Headpiece & our Vivian Swarovski Design

I was recently captivated by photos of Beverley Mitchell's (7th Heaven star) wedding to her accountant husband, Michael Cameron in Ravello, Italy on October 1, 2008. Not only was this event star-studded with the likes of Jennifer Biel and Justin Timberlake, but photos of the beautiful bride & her happy groom, in this stunning setting are a pleasure to view.

Beverley wore one of Melissa Sweet's beautiful gown, the Michala. . . but, of course, my eyes were drawn to her headpiece. She is wearing a gorgeous stone (diamonds? crystals?) hair accent that gently holds back the hair on the right side of her beautiful long curls. You can see in the photos below, that Beverley wears this stunning design in her hair under her traditional veiling during the ceremony as well as later when she removes the veiling for more boisterous celebration. She wore a long, cathedral length tulle veil with lace accents for the ceremony, a shorter elbow length tulle veil with lace accents for her post-ceremony reception moments, and no veiling for the remainder of the celebration.

I was reminded of our new Swarovski crystal hair accent, the Vivian, and thought the veiling idea might be of interest to some of you! If your budget allows for this design made of diamonds, we do have a gemologist on retainer to help us create your vision. If not, check out our lovely, hand-made Victoria. It is a stunning design fit for any star in our client list. . . and you are all stars to us!

We are loving this choice and think our version in the Magnolia design pictured below would be a lovely complement to any of the Dessy bridesmaid gowns in this exciting and rich color. I have been distracted from the blog lately with seemingly-endless tasks. . . Nonetheless, starting the shells of a list of entries that I am eager to share when time allows. My thanks goes to the team at HATalk who just shared this video on their Facebook page. It is a lovely collage of Princess Diana's style. An array of her millinery 'dot's on the "i"' or 'exclamation points'!

I think Graham Smith and later, Stephen Jones, were favorite milliners of the Princess.

I want to explore Smith's career with some gusto over the holiday break. and promise to share some of the treasures discovered.

Issa show, September 2010 in London. . .

Word is out that Kate Middleton has chosen her wedding gown designer. I have been exploring the work of her choice, Brazillian-born, London-based designer, Daniella Issa Helayel, and wondering what direction she will take for Kate's bridal gown. Issa designs are fresh and innovative; some collections stronger than others in my opinion. I have not been able to find a design in any Issa collection for the most formal of events, making this mystery all the more intriguing.

For starters, I absolutely LOVE Daniella's Issa London and Design by Issa websites. How marvelously creative her staff!

A 2009 Collection, which I love for its elegant neutrality . . .

The Spring/Summer 2010 Hurricane Collection, which I love for its boldness & color. . .

And the upcoming, Issa Spring/Summer, 2011 collection: COLOR & TURBANS. . . I really need to crank out the turban designs that have been incubating in the studio since this past summer!
