More Vintage Inspiration - 1950's Millinery Fashion

February 1, 2011

Visuals of Grace Kelly's mid-1950's wedding sent me to an archive of millinery styles to share (courtesy of my lovely daughter, Kirstin) . . .

Cloches of earlier decades evolved into the popular head hugging, brimless hats of the 1950's. This first style is representative of the turban sported by many women as more casual head apparel.

The red hat in the center of the collage below looks identical to the off-white designs seen on the runway last year. . . was it Stephen Jones collaboration with John Galliano? I think so. . .

Cocktails hats like that below were more simplified versions of the form covered in laces and other embellishments for Grace Kelly's bridal headpiece. . .

Colorful, artificial fruit and silk flowers were pervasively-popular trims on mid-20th century hats. . .

Feathers in their natural state or dyed in earth colors were also often used to trim hats during the 1950's. The natural iridescent cock feathers used in the design below may have foreshadowed the bouffant hairstyles that contributed to the reduction of millinery arts in fashion during the 1960's.

Berets were also popular during the 1950's. You have to love the bling on this one. Can you imagine what a contemporary beret made of Swarovski crystals would look like on the dance floor? We need to make one!

A shallow crown and wide brim has persisted as the popular style of our contemporary beach hats. These contemporary versions, however, generally lack elegant details such as the dual brim color (deep undertone) and the curvaceously-sculpted brim.

We will soon be introducing our Eve design; inspired by these vintage qualities with a modern twist . . . I am eager to shoot photos of the various ideas we have for wearing this versatile new design with or without veiling, and will share them when time allows. Let us know if you are interested!

Ahhhh, the glamour of the 50's. . . I just love it.

The millinery arts are alive and well in Hollywood, CA as evidenced by the dizzying Hollywood Legacy fashion show that took place this past October in association with LA Fashion Week. From the classic elegant designs of veteran milliner, Louise Green, to the sassy playful looks of new designer (Project Runway - Season 8), Mondo Guerra; there was something for everyone!

Although this video is marked on YouTube as the Spring, 2011 show, it is the Fall, 2011 show.

The Millinery Guild
Hollywood, California, United States
The Millinery Guild of Southern California is a membership group of Professional Milliners organized to foster interest in Hats, Millinery and Hat Wearing through Lectures, Instructional Workshops and a variety of classes in all aspects of traditional and contemporary millinery. We will sponsor activities, sales, Fashion Shows and charity events.

It is inspiring to see what this guild of 14 millinery designers has been inspired to organize. This was the guild's 2nd runway show, and I hope to see more such events in Southern Cal, as well as other US locations. It is time for the fashion world to recognize the importance of millinery contributions, as well as time for us to again recognize the importance of and fun in framing our most important assets, the true seat of our unique selves. Why would we pay more attention to the style at our feet than the style about our faces and heads? The mind boggles.

Watch out for those mouse traps!

Jezebel.com hat posting. . .

December 29, 2010

It makes my heart soar to see a growing interest in millinery arts (i.e. hats!) in the states. We are allowing ourselves a limitless avenue of personal expression with this renewed fashion statement! My daughter shared this recent posting on Jezebel.com. Not only did I enjoy reading the comments about this lovely chapeau (probably made of silk chiffon). I lost myself in exploration of an eclectic array of fascinating stories. I will be adding this site to my newsletter list.

Thinking of the warm, spring days now being experienced by our friends on the other side of the planet with some envy. . . and our friends experiencing harsh conditions along the Eastern seaboard of the states with concern.

Princess Diana's Hats. . . .

December 5, 2010

Graham Smith (milliner), Small, head, tiny roses, black and white chic,
Henry Clarke, British Vogue, 1965

I have been distracted from the blog lately with seemingly-endless tasks. . . Nonetheless, starting the shells of a list of entries that I am eager to share when time allows. My thanks goes to the team at HATalk who just shared this video on their Facebook page. It is a lovely collage of Princess Diana's style. An array of her millinery 'dot's on the "i"' or 'exclamation points'!

I think Graham Smith and later, Stephen Jones, were favorite milliners of the Princess.

I want to explore Smith's career with some gusto over the holiday break. and promise to share some of the treasures discovered.

Enjoy the video!

Conde'Nast "Vogue of Hats". . . A Milliner's View

September 2, 2010

I have enjoyed this classy video history of Vogue's portrayal of hats in fashion and art during the first half of the 20th century.

Our registrar, Gretchen Fenston, follows up her popular “Vogue of Hats” series with a look at the hat’s changing importance in women’s fashion through the decades, accompanied by some of her favorite hat images from the Archive.

The video summarizes a series of log entries written by Gretchen Fenston of Conde'Nast. Enjoy this excellent source of millinery history, "The Vogue of Hats".

Lady Gaga To Intern for Hat Designer Philip Treacy

No look for Lady Gaga is ever quite complete without a headpiece.

So it comes as no surprise that the singer would be interested in millinery.

And who better to learn from than legendary Irish hat maker Philip Treacy–the couture hat designer behind her unforgettable Grammys lightning bolt headpiece, Sarah Jessica Parker‘s famous green topper for the London Sex and the City premiere and a favorite of the late fashion icon Isabella Blow.

But whether or not Gaga follows in the path of stars like Ashley Olsen in becoming a design intern remains to be seen. “While nothing is set in stone, it is true that she has requested an internship with Philip,” confirms a rep for the label.

Having collaborated with Philip Treacy on a number of her most-famous headpieces, we think this would be a match made in fashion heaven! ~divareport.com

Sounds like a match made in heaven, indeed!

Hat Designer of the Year 2010 Competition. . .

The Hat Designer of the Year 2010
In collaboration with Premiere Classe, Paris

Designers must investigate the different aspects of STEAMPUNK and from their research write a short piece (50-100 words) on the directions they would like to explore and develop for the competition. If English is not your first language, please do not worry, as long as we can understand the basic idea of the explanation.

Using your own interpretation of STEAMPUNK, design on paper a small range of 6 hats developing this direction. They can be a mix of men's, wowen's or unisex styles; but must include:
* 2 soft hats - either made using a paper pattern or knitted/crocheted/woven styles.
* 2 blocked hats in straw or felt that could be made in a factory.
* 2 couture pieces in any material, made to a couture level finish of work.

The written explanation and drawings are to be submitted on sheets of A4 size paper and if possible include a swatch of the type of fabric used in each design. Your name, address, e-mail and telephone number must be written on the back of each sheet.

The entries must be received at The Hat Magazine office by the 31st of March 2010.

From the entries received 12 designers will be asked to make up one style from each category, selected by the judges. These hats should arrive in London before the end of May. The 36 hats will then be taken to Paris, to the offices of Premiere Classe, where 6 designers will be chosen and their designs will be displayed at the September show at the Porte de Versailles where the winner will be announced.

The competition is open to all designers, both amateur and professional, anyone who has previously exhibited at Premiere Classe will not be selected.

Stephen Jones & the OBE. . . .

February 22, 2010

It has just come to my attention that milliner extraordinaire, Stephen Jones, was awarded membership in the Order of the British Empire (a step toward Knighthood) last week (Feb, 2010) for his service to the Fashion Industry.

Jones chats about the world of millinery in the interview below, and a video I just found of his collaboration with Galliano for the Spring/Summer 2010 collection follows.

Finally, a story by Suzie Menkes in the New York Times (Feb. 21, 2010) briefly describes Stephen Jones' 2010 Fall Collection preview and a student exhibition organized by him at Somerset House (cleverly entitled, "Headonism") in London. It is a real teaser! I promise to share photos /videos when I find them.

Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones - Part 3, Victoria and Albert Museum - London

December 31, 2009

Millinery in action: making a hat in the Stephen Jones workroom from Victoria and Albert Museum on Vimeo.

The millinery workroom or atelier is the creative laboratory where hat designs are transformed from ideas into reality. In this video you can see one of Stephen Jones' creations come to life.

In the words of Stephen Jones, a milliner’s workroom is ‘half Aladdin’s cave and half artist’s studio’, a place where each hat is carefully coaxed into being.

This video was made for the Victoria & Albert Museum's exhibition 'Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones' 24 February - 31 May 2009. See www.vam.ac.uk/hats for more information.

I hope you enjoy this glimpse at the art of millinery!

Gauffered Gardenias by Breeziway . . .

December 27, 2009

Gardenia jasminoides

We do our best to meet the needs of our individual and retail clients and constantly seek new materials and methods to enhance our creative choices. A new retail affiliate has asked for a design using a low profile flower, such as a gardenia, in a bridal color that is surprisingly difficult to source via outside vendors. Many brides are now wearing a natural silk, off-white, sometimes called diamond white. Yet, millinery silk flowers are most frequently made in either brilliant white or a deeper ivory. Our solution? Make our own. We are quite happy with the results of today's studio activity; off-white gardenias made in plush, duchess silk satin. These beauties will be available in a range of bridal shades of white, champagne, and ivory, as well as custom dyed options.

Do let us know if you are interested in a headpiece design using our new gauffer-pressed gardenias. Those of you familiar with real gardenias know that these pretty blossoms are fragile and may turn brown to the touch. Our version will stay true to color for you. In France, Gardenia is the traditional flower which men wear as boutonnieres. Let us know if you would like a masculinized-version (without Swarovski crystal accent) for your groom's lapel.

The gardenias below are approximately 3 inches in diameter, but can be made in a smaller size.

Enjoying an energizing-high after a marvelous holiday with family and friends. . . hope you are as well,

Respect for the Hat - TIME Fashion Moments 2009

December 12, 2009

TIME magazine has just released its traditional Top 10 lists for 2009, and it is exciting for us to find local Detroit talent noted as number 7 in the Top 10 Fashion Moments. How I would LOVE to design a Breeziway piece for Aretha Franklin. Congratulations, Mr. Luke Song!

"The Queen of Soul almost stole the spotlight from the newly sworn-in President when she showed up to the Capitol podium on Inauguration Day in a gray felt hat topped off with a giant bedazzled bow. The $179 hat was the work of Mr. Song Millinery in Detroit, where hatmaker Luke Song has been whipping up custom creations for divas like Aretha Franklin for 25 years."
