The Genius of Richard Avedon - Photography, Fashion & Beauty. . .

January 9, 2009

I thoroughly enjoyed taking in the anthology of Richard Avedon's Fashion Photography - 1944 - 2000 at the Detroit Institute of Arts this New Year's Eve day!

Richard Avedon (1923 - 2004)

The fashion photos I found particularly genius were taken during the 1940's-1960's; the frozen movement caught mid-grace. . . the juxtaposition of often incongruous figure-ground elements or figure-figure comparisons of certain depth. . .

Avedon found and captured beauty in the profiles of unconventional beauties. . .

The composition of his later work was no less genius - the balance of static and fluid , but I preferred the relative uncontrived charm of his earlier work. . .

We have lost a master of the art of fashion photography.

Do catch this amazing exhibit when it comes your way!
