Wigging Out over Our Wigs! - A 'New Kid on the Block' Story. . .

October 21, 2010

Wigs at work. . . .

As already mentioned, we participated in our first bridal market/trade show last weekend. For a little over 2 years, we have served hundreds of clients from around the world. We have worked with many of them remotely, tweaking design elements to create perfect complements to each woman's ensemble, personality, and style. This is what Breeziway is about.

Wigs are an important tool to our service. Clients typically provide photos of their gowns, themselves, and their chosen hair styles, which we use to provide design suggestions. When a client is too far away to try on her headpiece in person, we provide her with photos of her design during its creation it situ, using a wig which resembles her hair color and style. It has worked quite well for us, and seemed like a reasonable way to share our new designs at the show.

I was somewhat surprised, therefore, when a 'buzz' filtered up to us during the first day. We learned that our wigs were causing a stir in some sectors of the exhibition; one fellow exhibitor reputedly calling them "creepy". . . really, now! headpieces on wigs, creepy? I felt transported back in time to days of high school and responded to the situation with the best humor I could.

Although I understand that we may approach our business and its display in ways that don't fit the stark 'norm', shouldn't an industry that considers itself to be creative be just a little more open to alternative perspectives? Please, let's try to play nicely. There is plenty of room for all of us on the playground!

Best regards to all, as always,

Katerina Bocci New York Wedding Trendspot Bridal Show - 2010

October 19, 2010

I am still dizzy with visions of the whirlwind of activity at the New York International Bridal Week this past weekend. There is so much to share when time allows. I am grateful to the talented and gracious Katerina Bocci for the opportunities that she has provided through our collaborations. The beauty and grace of the gowns in her 2011 Bridal Collection are beyond words; I will let them 'speak' for themselves via the visual media below.

The Katerina Bocci runway show was started with the "Cinderella" gown. Katerina's lovely model is wearing Breeziway's new crystal skull cap, the "Vivian"; available for purchase soon.

The "Grace" gown is topped-off with Breeziway's top-hat, now available exclusively via the KB studio. Thanks to my talented intern, Mercedes Williams, for her creative contributions to the design and creation of the "Grace" top-hat! Other Breeziway top-hats were introduced at the market and will be available via the Breeziway online shop and boutique affiliates in the near future.

The "Juliane" gown is accessorized with a new Swarovski crystal Breeziway sweep comb and birdcage veil, which is available exclusively via the KB studio.

The "Krystal" gown is accessorized below with the Breeziway bridal hat of the same name. This elegant hat is available exclusively via the KB studio.

The "Mariah" gown is accented with the new Breeziway crystal headband, "Victoria", which will be available via the Breeziway online shop and boutique affiliates soon.

Finally, the "Tika" gown is shown below with a Breeziway design inspired by this dreamy confection of blush peach silk taffeta and crystals. The Tika headpiece is made of dyed and cut nagoire and white peacock swallow feathers, accented with a chunky cluster of Swarovski crystals and is available exclusively via the KB studio.

Thank you Katerina, for the opportunity to work with you. . . and Joanne Darga, for your enduring friendship and support. I could not have negotiated the weekend's many twists and turns without your help.

It was a pleasure to meet those of you who stopped by the Breeziway booth at the New York International Bridal Week Show to view our designs and discuss future possibilities. We look forward to growing relations with each of you and hope the seeds planted will blossom into productive and beautiful creative ventures!

As always, my best wishes,

About Breeziway LLC:
The Breeziway venture began in August, 2007 just weeks before the company founder’s wedding in England. She and her partner, Paul, found themselves in the midst of a wedding reception at a hotel in Bedford, England where they stopped for a glass of wine during a stroll along the river. Sandra was ready for her special day, except for the decision of what to do with her hair. Sandra was totally fascinated by the beautiful headpieces worn by many of the women at this affair. After some research, she learned that they were called “Fascinators” in the United Kingdom and Australia. A fitting name it seemed to her, because she was totally fascinated herself by these fashion statements. She made a fascinator of her own to wear on her wedding day, and the rest is now company history. Sabbatical from her professorship provided time to explore this new avenue of expression. She studied with a Royal Milliner in London, and Breeziway as a business venture was born.

Sandra holds several degrees in the fields of biology and psychology, including a PhD and two post-doctoral degrees in Neuropsychology, Clinical Psychology, and Neurophysiology. Her career academic has played out in the classroom,, laboratory, and clinic.

Sandra’s longstanding and enduring love of design with textiles began during middle childhood when, determined to create the ‘to-die-for’ wardrobe for her Barbie doll, she sought whatever guidance and training she could from her European and considerably-experienced mother and grandmothers. She designed and sewed much of her own wardrobe throughout high school and several wedding gowns for herself and friends in the years to follow. During her undergraduate college years, Sandra was highly sought by friends to create unique designs for their special events. But, alas, her scientific career distracted her from this love. . . except, of course, for the epic Halloween designs made during her daughter’s childhood.

Sandra’s rediscovery of her passion for design came with the regeneration stimulated by her recent marriage to Paul. Her knowledge of the millinery arts has grown through the study of any vintage books she can find, professional publications, and the tutelage of Royal Milliner, Rose Cory, and Rose’s other students. Breeziway is a labor of love that Sandra nurtures with the same energy, dedication, and commitment she has brought to other life ventures. She is responsible for the daily operations of the company, including the sourcing of materials, design, creation and marketing. She has recently initiated the process of choosing and training protégés to assist with these responsibilities as she carefully selects affiliates to expand the availability of Breeziway designs. The Breeziway studio is now an official intern site for the Detroit Campus of the International Academy of Design and Technology, and Sandra was recently accepted into the Fashion Group International.
